A medical congress stronghold with an excellent healthcare system and first-class event infrastructure
The events held in Leipzig reflect the city’s success as a venue for medical congresses and conferences. Successful events such as the recurring congress for visceral medicine and BIO-Europe 2022 are proof of the city’s deep commitment to establishing itself as a reliable international host.
Leipzig has a competitive advantage for the industry: a state-of-the-art healthcare system characterised by intelligent medical technology and advanced treatment and diagnostic procedures. This makes the city in central Germany one of the world’s leading centres for medical research, production and organisation.
The Congress Center Leipzig (CCL), the city’s largest event centre, hosts a variety of major medical congresses each year, providing a forum for new ideas and professional exchange. It also hosts the Leipzig Interventional Course (LINC), an interdisciplinary congress that has become a global platform for vascular medicine. LINC is internationally recognised in the convention world as a prime example of the integration of digital solutions and innovative space concepts.
The region also boasts first-class infrastructure with excellent transport links: the modern Leipzig/Halle Airport is another of Leipzig’s advantages as a location, especially for freight and supplies. Leipzig has an efficient public transport network, which plays a key role in allowing people to move around the city in a comfortable and environmentally friendly way.
Local stakeholders have teamed up to support Leipzig’s event industry: around 50 partners such as congress centres, conference hotels and service agencies are working together in the congress initiative “Feel the spirit ... do-it-at-leipzig.de”. This strong network assists organisers with the application process as well as the planning, preparation and delivery of industry events.
The city itself is also committed to promoting major events, with the city administration ensuring clearly defined responsibilities and quick decision-making. In cooperation with Leipziger Messe and the local host organisation, the city identifies event formats locally and establishes its future role as host. Leipzig invites organisers, associations and decision-makers to ‘site inspections’, letting them see for themselves the advantages of this first-class congress destination. Unique venues for evening receptions include the Gewandhaus, the Kongresshalle and Gondwanaland at Zoo Leipzig.
Leipzig: Where science, research and practice meet
Leipzig’s strength in the medical industry lies in the speed at which it can implement innovations from biotechnology, biomedicine, medical engineering and bioinformatics. Companies from these areas benefit above all from the close networks that Leipzig offers them: institutions such as the University of Leipzig’s Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, the Centre for Biotechnology and Biomedicine and the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI work hand in hand on the BIO CITY Leipzig Life Science Campus. What’s more, BIO CITY’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities provide the ideal conditions for cutting-edge research made in Leipzig.
The city in Saxony also excels in the clinical field: the Heart Center Leipzig, the University of Leipzig Medical Center with its 27 clinics and outpatient departments and eight institutes, and the municipal Klinikum St. Georg are internationally renowned.
Dr Ronny Schulz from Leipzig’s Office for Economic Development, who is responsible for the city’s Healthcare and Biotech Cluster, points out: “Leipzig has a long tradition as an important location for research, science and knowledge transfer in the life sciences. This tradition makes the city an excellent venue for trade fairs, congresses and conferences in this field, as it is closely linked to clinical and scientific excellence through its universities, research institutes and university hospital. Leipzig’s strengths include its compact size, network partners with a focus on knowledge and technology transfer, and a start-up-friendly ecosystem.”
The city of Leipzig is pursuing a cluster strategy that links promising growth sectors such as healthcare and biotechnology. A variety of activities are designed to promote this cluster. It is thanks to this policy that Leipzig is now one of the most dynamic clusters in the life sciences sector.
