Set firmly on its path to modernisation with its master plan Zoo of the future, Zoo Leipzig has developed into one of the world’s most modern zoological parks over the past 20 years and clearly ranks amongst the most renowned zoos worldwide. So far, the tropical experience world Gondwanaland marks the Zoo’s biggest project of this successful development. The tropical hall is the only one of its kind in Europe and takes its visitors into a primeval rainforest with more than 24,000 tropical plants and about 300 exotic animal species.

Even a zoo consumes a lot of resources and consequently leaves an ecological footprint. To gradually reduce this footprint Zoo Leipzig is the first zoo in Germany that has started to implement EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). Since then, environmentally friendly measures for improvement have been planned and implemented every year.
