Our Tagungslounge is located in the newly built (2010) Katharinum. Four different architect’s offices contributed to the design of the building’s unique characteristic. Even though each front displays its own individual feature, connecting elements present the building as an unmistakable whole. Certified as a Green Building by American LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the building has to comply with stringent conditions in regard to climate protection and energy efficiency.
The site also played an important role in Leipzig’s development into a centre of music. Johann Sebastian Bach, during his time in Leipzig from 1723 to 1750 was a regular the “Zimmermannsches Kaffeehaus”, a café which until its destruction during World War II, stood at the spot where the Katharinum now is situated. At this place, also from 1729 to 1743 Bach played music with the Collegium Musicum, a musical ensemble formed by the city’s university students. These public performances were pivotal to Leipzig’s growth into a metropolitan, famous for its Gewandhaus and musical tradition in general. Among others, Bach’s “Kaffeekantate” and the canon “C-a-f-f-e-e” are well-known compositions of that time period.
