Focus on society and politics

The German Child and Youth Welfare Congress

Europe’s largest youth welfare summit will be held in Leipzig in 2025: from 13 to 15 May, the 18th German Child and Youth Welfare Congress (DJHT) will focus squarely on the U27 generation and the motto “Because it’s about the bigger picture: Realising democracy through participation”. The congress will comprise more than 250 events. The accompanying exhibition will feature over 350 exhibitors from all areas of child and youth welfare. The event is expected to attract around 30,000 guests from Germany and Europe. The main venues are the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) and Leipzig’s exhibition grounds.

International Transport Forum

Just a few days later, the international transport industry will gather at the CCL for the Annual Summit of the International Transport Forum. As the most important event in global transport policy, the International Transport Forum (ITF) will welcome transport ministers and delegations as well as representatives of business, science and society from some 80 countries from 21 to 23 May. The motto in 2025 will be “Enhancing Transport Resilience to Global Shocks”. Sustainable mobility is also a constant focus at the ITF. Every year, companies in Leipzig use the summit as a platform for presentations and networking.


German Medical Assembly

The German Medical Association will be holding its annual general meeting in Leipzig from 27 to 30 May. It will be exactly 100 years since the “parliament of the medical profession” last visited Leipzig. The 129th German Medical Assembly at the CCL will deal with regulations on professional law and resolutions by the medical profession on current health and socio-political discussions. The 17 German State Chambers of Physicians send representatives to this assembly. In addition to the CCL, they will also experience events at St Nicholas’ Church and the Paulinum assembly hall and University Church of St Paul.

Conferences for pneumology experts

Experts in the field of pneumology will meet at several conferences in Leipzig in 2025: the Society for Paediatric Pneumology (GPP) will hold its 46th annual conference from 12 to 15 March at the Jahnallee campus of the University of Leipzig. The GPP is the scientific society for paediatric pulmonology in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The annual conference will focus on innovations, such as AI in diagnostics, as well as scientific research and clinical practice. The German Society for Pneumology (DGP) will hold its congress at the CCL from 9 to 12 April. There will also be programme items relating to pneumology at therapie LEIPZIG, the leading trade fair and congress for therapy, medical rehabilitation and prevention. As part of therapie LEIPZIG 2025 from 8 to 10 May, the 1st German Rehabilitation Sports Congress will also take place.

Vascular specialists visit Leipzig

The LeipzigInterventionalCourse(LINC), the world’s largest interdisciplinary event for angiologists, vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists, will take place at Leipzig’s exhibition grounds from 28 to 30 January. The congress originated in Leipzig and illustrates the synergy between the medical expertise of the location and the best conditions for industry meetings. Vascular medicine will also be the focus of the 54th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Angiology – Society for Vascular Medicine and the DGA Intervention Congress from 18 to 20 September at the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig.


Focus on environmental dentistry

Have you ever heard of environmental dentistry? This interdisciplinary field for dentists, dental assistants, physicians and dental technicians focuses on the comprehensive dental care of chronically ill patients. The annual meeting of the German Society for Environmental Dentistry will take place on 9 and 10 May at the KONGRESSHALLE.


Annual meeting of the German Society for Pathology

The German Society of Pathology will hold its annual meeting in Leipzig from 12 to 14 June. Under the motto “Expect the extraordinary”, the focus at the CCL will include the diagnosis of rare diseases given the difficult balance between broad-based care and specialisation, as well as the importance of teaching for the discipline at large. Attracting an increasing number of international guests, the conference will be held in English for the first time.


Conferences for neuropsychologists and neurologists

The 9th Scientific Meeting of the Federation of the European Societies of Neuropsychology (FESN) and the 40th Annual Meeting of the German Neuropsychological Society (GNP) will take place in the KONGRESSHALLE from 4 to 6 September. Neuropsychologists and neurologists from across Europe and beyond will present the latest findings from neuroscientific and clinical studies.


Annual conference of the German Society of Orthodontics (DGKFO)

The German Society of Orthodontics will host its annual DGKFO congress in Leipzig for the first time from 10 to 13 September 2025. The conference president is Till Köhne, Head of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Leipzig Medical Center. The main theme of the congress: excellence through evidence. When it comes to staging the event, Leipzig ticks all the boxes with its diversity: the conference will take place in the CCL; the opening ceremony in the KONGRESSHALLE; the Assistants’ Evening at the Felix Suites on Augustusplatz; and the Gala Evening at the Salles de Pologne.


Congress for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine

Interdisciplinary cooperation is also the focus of the Congress for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the CCL from 24 to 27 September. The event is organised by the German Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine, the German Society for Paediatric Surgery, the German Society for Social Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and the German Professional Association for Paediatric Nursing. The main topic will be medicines for children and young people with chronic illnesses and impairments. The annual meeting of the German Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI) will take part alongside the event.


VISCERAL MEDICINE congress

The VISCERAL MEDICINE congress will return to Leipzig from 15 to 20 September 2025. More than 5,000 participants attended the largest congress for gastroenterology and visceral surgery in German-speaking countries in 2024. The event is organised by the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) and the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV).

Chemistry in all its facets

Several events highlight Leipzig’s importance for the field of chemistry. In 2025, the Division of Analytical Chemistry of the German Chemical Society is organising ANAKON, the most important joint conference for analytical chemistry in the German-speaking world, from 10 to 13 March in Leipzig. The venue is the Neues Augusteum and Paulinum on Augustusplatz. The German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry invites delegates to the Bunsen Conference 2025 under the motto “Physical Chemistry of the Climate and the Atmosphere” from 17 to 19 March. The venue is the University of Leipzig’s Jahnallee campus. ISMET9, the 9th World Conference of the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (ISMET), will be held from 16 to 19 September at the Leipzig KUBUS. The conference brings together leading scientists, researchers and industry experts from around the world.

Digital timber construction: EASTWOOD

There is also a lively conference programme at other university locations in Leipzig. One example is the EASTWOODconference on digital timber construction, which will take place on 18 and 19 September 2025 at Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig). Wood will be at the centre of attention as a sustainable and versatile material for climate-friendly, energy- and resource-efficient construction. The congress wants to create a network to accelerate the development of building with wood. It will welcome experts from architecture, engineering, construction, timber construction, carpentry, science and research, as well as representatives of the timber trade, building owners and investors.

Major sporting events and festivals

German Gymnastics Festival

It’s not just conference and congress organisers who have confidence in Leipzig. As a UEFA EURO 2024 host city, Leipzig has shown how well it can handle major sporting events. And 2025 will be no different, with the International German Gymnastics Festival from 28 May to 1 June. With 80,000 athletes and up to 750,000 visitors, it is the largest competitive and amateur sporting event in the world. The Turnfest Academy will offer more than 400 practical and theoretical training programmes. In addition to Leipzig’s exhibition grounds as the central venue, around 40 other locations in the city will be involved. One highlight will be the Stadium Gala at the Red Bull Arena on 31 May.

MACHN Festival

The MACHN Festival stands for dialogue between business, technology, art and culture. On 18 and 19 June 2025, the MACHN Festival will once again bring together companies, founders, start-ups, developers, creative professionals, institutions and projects from central Germany on the grounds of the Spinnerei in Leipzig. Networking and knowledge transfer meet art and culture. There will be a varied programme of workshops, pitches, presentations and live entertainment on several stages.
